PRESS RELEASE 3rd March
2004 winner Gary White in his Escort WRC. Photo by Colin Courtney. The picturesque surroundings of Rostrevor Forest will echo to the sound of highly tuned engines on 12th March for the annual Patrick Haughey Partnership backed Kilbroney Stages Rally, in association with Autoglass and Formula Karting. The Rathfriland Motor Club run event has become a popular fixture among clubman competitors, and entries are already piling in from all parts of Ireland. The Rally contains 30 miles of challenging roads and tracks within the Rostrevor and Kilbroney Forest complex with a change between tarmac and gravel to keep the drivers on their toes. The first car is expected to leave the start ramp at 9am and the cars can be viewed in the service park in Kilbroney Park throughout the day. A spectator area will cater for all the family, with toilets, a play park and café all within easy access of the action. Last years event produced the closest finish yet in the history of the Rally. 2003 winner, Gary White, headed the 63 strong entry out of service in the 4 wheel drive turbo Escort WRC, but it was Camillus Bradley who drew first blood in a Mark 2 Escort to take an initial lead, followed by Glenn Wilson in the ex Kenny McKinstry F2 Escort. During the day, Gary White attacked the narrow roads to draw level going into the last stage. Both men set off into the last stage determined to take the victors laurels, but it was White who emerged victor from Bradley with Glenn Wilson securing third by 1 second. This years Rally hopes to be equally exciting, with a maximum entry of cars expected (including a Ford Focus RS WRC) as Gary White defends his title and goes for 3 in a row.
